Super Spider World

Description

Take the role of a little spider and try to survive as long as you can by climbing higher and higher.

Super Spider World is a Ludum Dare 34 entry that was received quite well. It earned our jam team a long-yearned-for place in the top 100, which we achieved in the innovation category. Using the "Growing" theme, we debated several ideas before agreeing to use spiders and webs as our concept. We started very “mechanically”. What should the spider do?, What are her resources? and so on, and researched how spiders generally build their webs.

I did the programming of the main logic and worked more or less alone on the game on the last day because the other guys were busy. After two days we had functioning main mechanics but no working gameplay loop.

What always helps when you are stuck with an unfinished experience and some mechanics is to think about an end condition that ties them together. So I thought that it would make sense to introduce a sense of urgency with rising lava that forces you to climb higher and higher while you are trying to survive against the incoming bees and try to catch flies. I'm very glad I made this decision as it helped to make all player decisions stronger.
